Headline formula
Social proof headlines
Based on 1031 top-chart iOS apps analyzed in August 2026.
The formula
A headline that borrows credibility: user counts, ratings, awards, press, or expert endorsement. It accounts for 3% of the headlines in our corpus.
Typical shape: "Join over 6 million members", "Apple Watch App of the Year".
When to use it
- Rare as a headline formula but common as an accent: laurels and star ratings appear across categories.
- Strongest for apps where trust is the barrier: finance, medical, dating, marketplaces.
- Pair the claim with its source (award laurel, star row); an unsourced "loved by millions" is wallpaper.
Types of social proof
The headlines in this corpus cluster into a few kinds of proof:
- User count — “Join over 6 million members”
- Rating or rank — “No.1 Mobile Scanner in the U.S.”
- Award — “Apple Watch App of the Year”
- Press — “Featured in App Store”
- Testimonial — “I struggle with reading… Dwell helps.”
Headline vs accent
Social proof as a headline means the words are the proof: “Join over 6 million members” is the slide. Social proof as an accent means the headline is still a benefit (“Fall asleep faster”) and stars, laurels, or a rating pill sit under it.
Proof headlines are rare in the corpus (3% of headlines). Star rows and award laurels show up as accents far more often. Use the headline when the proof is the message; use an accent when the benefit should stay in front.
